Cursor vs Claude Code: real monthly cost

What you actually pay each month, and which plan fits how much you code.

Cursor's plans now share one AI usage pool across Cursor and Grok. Third-party models (Claude, for example) are not in that pool: Cursor bills them separately, at API list price.

  • Free: $0/month. Limited agent and chat requests.
  • Plus: $8/month. Basic shared usage pool, Grok models only.
  • Premium: $30/month. 4x the usage of Plus, cloud agents, Bugbot code reviews, and third-party models at API list price.
  • Super: $100/month. 15x the usage of Plus, plus priority model access at peak times.
  • Ultra: $200/month. 50x the usage of Plus, plus earliest access to new products and models.
  • Teams: from $30/user/month · Enterprise: custom pricing.

The usage allowance refreshes weekly. Top-offs are available once you use it up. Cursor recommends Premium for new AI users, Super for daily agent users, and Ultra for power users.

Claude Code comes with every paid Claude plan. It draws from the same usage limits as chat, and those limits reset every 5 hours. Paid plans also have weekly limits.

  • Free: $0. Does not include Claude Code.
  • Pro: $20/month billed monthly, or $17/month on the annual plan ($200 billed up front). Includes Claude Code.
  • Max: from $100/month, billed monthly. Choose 5x or 20x Pro's usage. Includes priority access, plus $100 to $200/month in API credits for the Claude Platform. The page lists the Max 5x price ("from $100"). Check the vendor for the exact Max 20x price.
  • Team / Enterprise: Enterprise costs $20 per seat per month, plus usage billed at API rates.
  • Pay-as-you-go: For heavy sessions you can use API credits through a Console account. Example list prices: Sonnet 5.5 at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens; Opus 5.5 at $4 input and $20 output per million tokens.

If you hit a limit on a paid plan, you can turn on usage credits and keep working at standard API rates.

Light user (a few sessions a week)

Cursor Free ($0) or Plus ($8), or Claude Pro ($20 monthly / $17 annual). Choose Cursor if you want an AI editor and Grok models are enough. Choose Claude Pro if you want Claude models and terminal agents. Claude's Free plan does not include Claude Code, so Pro is the cheapest way in.

Daily user (most workdays)

Cursor Premium ($30), or Claude Pro ($20), moving up to Max from $100 if you keep hitting the 5-hour limits. Watch one thing on Cursor: if you pick Claude or other third-party models inside Cursor, that usage is billed on top of the plan price.

Heavy user (long agent loops all day)

Cursor Super ($100) or Ultra ($200), or Claude Max (from $100, at 5x or 20x Pro usage). At this level the subscription becomes a usage cap. Compare how much included usage you get per dollar, not just the sticker price. Claude Max also includes monthly API credits.

Hybrid: the Claude Code extension inside Cursor

Anthropic's Claude Code IDE docs include a direct "Install for Cursor" option. The extension signs in with any paid Claude plan (Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise) or a Console account, and needs no API key. That means Claude usage comes out of your Claude plan, not out of Cursor's separately billed third-party model usage. A typical setup is Cursor Free or Plus for the editor ($0 to $8) plus Claude Pro ($20). That totals $20 to $28/month, or about $17 to $25/month with Claude's annual billing. If you also want Cursor's cloud agents and Bugbot, Premium plus Pro comes to $50/month.
